FIVE MINUTES WITH // THE STOLEN GEM
This month we spend five minutes with the guys from the elegant and stylish new rooftop bar, The Stolen Gem.
When did you first become interested in the world of hospitality?
Funnily enough, the story behind how we found ourselves working in hospitality is different for each Stolen Gem director. For example, myself (Matt), only entered the hospitality world 3-4 years ago when I was looking for a new office space. I found a warehouse in Ringwood & I only required half of it, so a decision was made to ask my brother and best mate if they’d like to transform the space into a bar with me – which is now the successful Budgie Smuggler!
Whereas one of our other directors, Jeff, has lived & breathed hospitality for 20+ years, so we’re very lucky to now have him helping us along our journey.
You have recently celebrated the opening of your rooftop space, The Stolen Gem. What were your inspirations behind the design of the space and what challenges arose when designing the interiors or in this case, exterior?
Being an inner-city venue, we knew we had to have a wow factor! The venue’s view, speaks for itself and we have enjoyed a drink or two on plastic chairs whilst going back & forth with how we needed to have this space complement that stunning cityscape.
Kim from Hunt & Home took the industrial vibe of our other venues & flipped it on its head. We have installed a rusted panelling feature around the fire place all the way up to our light box which can be viewed from Bourke Street Mall, along with wooden planter boxes with steel grates for green ivy to grow along. From here, Kim visited Space to Create and knew she wanted pops of metallic to complement the bright lights!
As for tiles, wallpaper, glassware, art & small finishing touches, we trusted Kim to just do her thing and everything fell together seamlessly. STAG Shop Fittings worked on the structural elements. Our biggest challenge was the installation of the retractable roof – it was a huge job, but it is a big feature and worth every hiccup! Not to mention every piece of our fit out was purposely built to fit in the lift & built onsite to avoid cranes. Expect the large pink chesterfield couch, this was carried up 8 flights of stairs.
What are you excited about this year?
We’re excited to get our name out there and show the city what we’re all about, when attending an event at our venue you will have an unforgettable experience! We have some of Australia’s best bartenders, and our food/beverage service is theatrical, extensive & delicious!
What is the best mistake you have ever made?
The best mistake was blowing our budget to make it better then what we ever envisioned!
Best piece of advice you have been given?
To always smile and be polite, because you never know who you may be speaking to and how that person could impact future opportunities.
Anywhere with a sunset view!
