INTERVIEW // DESIGN TWINS
Who is the Design Twins , and what is your role/s within the company?
Name: Crystal Lindsay
Design Twins started two years ago, making concrete homewares in our apartment. We both loved designing and making as well as experimenting with different textures. We moved several times over two years as our business kept growing. We joked about how cool it would be to open a business showcasing Australian made products, with makers creating products in their own small workshops. We have now expanded to a shop front in St Peters, along with our own workshop, and successful online store. Our business is about supporting local makers and creators. We are still learning so much, but we love doing what we do and we get to work with each other which is great.
Design Twins is made of me and my husband Mitch, I am the designer and stylist and Mitch deals with the boring stuff, he is the business man.
Which three words best describes you?
Tell us a little about your background and what path led you to what you are doing today.
I started playing music at the age of 14 while growing up with my brothers and sisters in Tamworth. During this time we were signed to a record label and toured around the country. However, I preferred the creativity of design rather than the creativity I found through music. I am naturally drawn to design as I am a visual person and when I fell pregnant with my first son, I realised being on tour wasn’t ideal so I was keen to pursue my creative endeavours with Design Twins.
What are your favourite trends of the moment?
Ocean grunge, textures and raw materials such as concrete and linen.
What colour palette are you loving?
Indigo, white, black, blush and grey.
What can’t you get enough of right now?
When writing this interview, Mitch and I are getting married in two weeks. So wedding planning has taken over everything I do right now so I would say wedding inspiration. Proteas – the colours and textures of them when dry.
Who or what inspires you? Where do you look for inspiration?
I am inspired by everything around me, especially nature – the colours of flowers and the ocean. Also eating in different cafes and restaurants and seeing how they have designed the building and interiors. I use Instagram for inspiration and to source makers and designers that haven’t been discovered before. I am also inspired by @the_stables_, she is a has created a market for homewares that are soft but not too girly. Her designs are moody and captures emotion, plus she is a down-to-earth person.
What would be your dream creative project?
To design a café or hospitality space full of greenery, to create a themed event, or to work on an editorial photoshoot. I like the combination of editorial when styling, but people need to imagine the space within their own home.
What do you do to get away from it all?
I don’t like to relax. I scroll Instagram to seek inspiration and source new brands. My head is always buzzing with ideas it is hard to turn it off! But if I am completely run down, I run away to the beach and close my eyes and take in the sound of the ocean!
What are you reading and listening to?
I hardly read, I can’t read and write very well but I can style! To unwind I have been watching Netflix, and work online from 8pm until midnight once the kids are asleep. I have been watching Stranger Things, it is easy to switch off and not think about things when I do this. I find it relaxing when I work on my computer at night – is that weird?
Which Space To Create piece is your favourite?
Sphere Marble Dining Table which is in store!!
If you were a piece of furniture which would you be? Why?
I’d be a prop, I would be a beautiful plant as it brings energy and life to a space.
Name your favourite local location.
My favourite location is The Grounds of Alexandria, that space always energizes and inspires me.
