INTERVIEW // JUMBLED
Who/what is JUMBLED, and what is your role/s within the company?
JUMBLED is a homewares store located in Orange, New South Wales. We recently moved our store into a big old Masonic Hall that we’ve renovated and named The Sonic. We share the space with our clothing store, iglou, and a café Nimrod’s. The Sonic is owned by Pip Brett and I guess you could call me her right hand gal. I take care of our two online stores, and I am physically in store most of the week to help customers find the perfect artwork, bedding, cushions or gifts!
Tell us a little about your background and what path led you to what you are doing today?
I studied visual arts and design so I work as a freelance Graphic Designer. When I graduated and moved to orange I wasn’t really sure if I would find work in my field, but thankfully Pip found me! I’ve always loved working in retail – I’m really passionate about customer service – so this is my dream job! Not only am I in store working with customers but I manage our marketing, social media and online stores. There is always something to do, and I love it!
What are your favourite trends of the moment?
I am definitely a mixer not a matcher, so at the moment I am really obsessed with clashing! Pattern clashing, colour clashing and particularly texture clashing. I can’t get enough of beautiful crushed linens and soft shaggy rugs and cushions – so much fun!
What colour palette are you loving?
I’ve always been a sucker for fresh mint but funnily enough I’m having a little love affair with pink at the moment! I just love a soft dusty pink – it’s a beautiful colour to have in the home.
What can’t you get enough of right now?
Linen! On my bed, in my wardrobe, as a throw on the couch… I just love it! Thankfully, with access to both a homewares store and a clothing store, I’m never short of a linen fix. Kip & Co, one of my all time favourite brands, has made linen really approachable. As much as I love the idea of a crisp white linen set, it’s just not for me. We’re so lucky to stock linen sheets, quilts and pillowcases in a wide array of colours and patterns, so my inner mixer is so incredibly happy!
Who or what are some of your influences? What other retailers, peers and creative in general do you admire?
Working in social media, I’m lucky enough to be completely flooded with inspiration daily. Thank goodness for Instagram, really it’s my favourite platform! You can so easily get lost in this amazing creative world, people are just so clever! For Jumbled, it’s no secret that we’re totally obsessed with Julia green and the work she does through Greenhouse Interiors. Pip and I squeal over almost every single post – Julia just has such an eye for styling and she finds the most incredible creative to represent.
What would be your dream creative project?
Oh gosh, there are just so many possibilities here! One of my favourite things is when we receive a totally amazing original artwork in store. My total dream would be to curate a huge exhibition, with all my all time favourite brands together under one roof (at the same time – which would be an amazing feat in our world)! We would have a huge opening night with all my favourite people, and delicious food of course!
What is the best lesson you’ve learnt?
I’m still working on this one, it’s one of my current goals – to ask for help when needed. it sounds so simple but it’s often the hardest thing we can do, and I definitely struggle with it.
What do you do to get away from it all?
I’m a total homebody, so I love nothing more than a lazy afternoon at home with my husband, and a gin & tonic. That to me, is total bliss!
What are you reading?
I really love to read, it’s how I separate my day from my dreams. At the moment I’m reading The Great Gatsby for what could be the 12th time.
Which Space To Create piece is your favourite?
The Ryder Armchair in the dusty pink of course!
If you were a piece of furniture which would you be? Why?
Oh this is a fun one! An ultra comfy armchair – your old faithful. It might not be super stylish but it’s reliable, comforting and there when you need it.
Name your favourite local location.
We are SO lucky in Orange, there are amazing places left right and centre! if I wasn’t hanging out at The Sonic (clothes, homewares and the BEST coffee ever) then you can probably find me at The Grocer and Co, The Union Bank, Good Eddy, The Whiskey Bar or Percy’s. We can be instant friends though if you take me to Lolli Redini for cheese soufflé – the quickest way to my heart.
